HubSpot's Traffic Just Dropped 27%. This Is Not a Bug.
The Signal: HubSpot's internal data shows organic traffic for their customers fell 27% year-over-year. Half of B2B buyers (51%) now start research with an AI chatbot instead of Google, up from 29% last year. But brands cited by AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks. The game didn't break. It moved.
A coach messaged me yesterday.
"Sunny... my traffic's been dropping for three months. I've tripled my content. Changed nothing. What's happening?"
I told him what I'm about to tell you.
It's not you.
It's not your content.
It's not your keywords.
HubSpot... with all their SEO firepower, their publishing machine, their 200 people on content... just reported their customers lost 27% of organic traffic in twelve months.
If they can't fight this, neither can you.
But there's a reason I'm not panicking. And I don't want you to either.
The Numbers Everybody Needs to See
Here's what's actually happening under the hood of the internet right now.
Non-branded informational query traffic is down 15 to 30 percent across content sites.
ChatGPT Search is processing 250 to 500 million weekly queries. Perplexity is at 50 million. Gemini grabbed 22% of AI website traffic in Q1.
And the buyer behavior shift is the scariest part for anyone still playing the old game.
Half of your ideal clients are no longer Googling you.
They're asking ChatGPT. Claude. Perplexity. Gemini.
And the AI is quietly picking a few brands to mention... and ignoring every other one.
Here's the Uncomfortable Truth
Most coaches I work with are still optimizing for a search engine that's slowly dying.
They're obsessing over keyword density. Meta descriptions. Internal linking. Schema markup for Google.
All useful. All necessary. None of it sufficient anymore.
The old SEO playbook was built to win the click. The new one is built to win the answer.
If ChatGPT gives someone a five-sentence summary of the best coaches for their situation... and you're not in it... the click never existed.
You didn't lose the ranking.
You never got into the conversation.
The Real Shift: Citation Is the New Ranking
The data point nobody is framing right.
Brands that AI Overviews cite earn 35% more organic clicks. And 91% more paid clicks.
Being named by an AI is now worth more than being first on Google.
It's not enough to exist on the internet. You have to be the thing AI references when it answers a question in your space.
Win the click
Rank on Google. Hope they click. Capture the session. Convert via landing page.
Win the answer
Become the source AI cites. Get mentioned in the summary. Earn authority before the click happens.
What Actually Makes You Citable
Four things. In order of leverage.
1. Clear, opinionated takes. AI systems extract strong, specific statements. Not fence-sitting content. Not "10 tips" listicles. Take a stand. Be quotable. "Most coaches are losing clients because they optimize for Google and ignore AI search" is the kind of line that gets pulled.
2. Proprietary data and frameworks. AI loves original sources. Your case study numbers. Your framework names. Your client outcomes. The ELEVATE Method. The 4-Pillar Framework. A named thing with data behind it gets cited.
3. Structured clarity. Clean headings. Clear definitions. Question-and-answer formatting. The way this post is written. AI can parse it, pull it, credit it.
4. Distribution density. One citation doesn't move the needle. You need your name, your framework, your POV showing up across multiple authoritative corners of the internet. Podcasts. Guest posts. LinkedIn. Your own site. Enough surface area that the AI sees you everywhere.
This isn't more work than SEO was.
It's different work.
The Coaches Who Get This Early Win the Decade
Here's what nobody's saying out loud.
The 27% drop is an average.
Some brands lost 50%. Some gained 40%.
The redistribution is brutal but clean. The AI decides who it mentions. It mentions fewer brands. And the ones it mentions get a bigger share of a smaller pie.
Winner-take-most has always been the pattern on the internet.
AI just accelerated it.
The coaches who stop chasing keywords and start building citation-worthy authority will own their corner of the market for the next five years.
The ones who keep doing what they did in 2023... will keep watching their traffic bleed.
Your Move
Open ChatGPT.
Type: "Who are the best coaches for [your niche]?"
If your name doesn't show up in the answer... that's the actual problem.
It's not a ranking problem.
It's a visibility problem at a layer most coaches haven't even acknowledged exists yet.
The good news? It's fixable. Faster than SEO ever was.
Because once AI sees you as a reference point... the compounding is brutal in your favor.
